Most people think a visa is one transaction. It is not.

Why visa work goes wrong, and what managing it properly actually means

A UAE residence visa is a chain of separate approvals, issued by different authorities, in a fixed order. An entry permit is one authority. The medical test is another. Emirates ID is another again. Labour side approvals sit with a different department entirely from immigration.

Each step depends on the one before it being correct. Get a name spelled differently on two documents, or let an entry permit lapse while you wait for a medical slot, and you do not lose one step. You lose your place in the chain and pay again for part of it.

That is the whole reason visa management exists as a service. Not because any single step is difficult, but because somebody has to hold the sequence, watch the expiry dates inside it, and catch a mismatch before it reaches a government counter rather than after.

What we actually do. We take the file from start to residence stamp. We prepare and check every document before submission, book and attend what needs attending, track every deadline inside the chain, and tell you the total cost in writing before we begin. If something is going to be refused, you hear it from us at the start, not from a counter three weeks in.

Every visa we manage, and how they differ

Who sponsors whom is the thing that changes everything

People use these names loosely, which causes real problems, because the sponsor determines the documents, the authority and the cost. The distinction below is the one that matters.

Investor visa

Company sponsors its sole owner

For the person who owns the company on their own. If there is a single owner on the license, that owner takes an investor visa. The license itself is the basis of the application, so the company must exist and be correctly licensed first. You are effectively sponsoring yourself through the entity you own.

This is usually the first visa a founder takes, because holding it makes you a resident and lets you then sponsor family.

Where it goes wrong. The license and the passport must agree exactly on the name. A middle name present on one and absent on the other is a common and avoidable rejection.

Partner visa

Company sponsors one of several owners

Where a company has more than one owner, each qualifying owner takes a partner visa rather than an investor visa. The company sponsors them on the strength of their shareholding, which is why the shareholding itself has to clear two thresholds.

The partner must hold more than 20 percent of the shares, and the company's share capital must be AED 50,000 or above. Fall short on either and that person cannot take a partner visa, however the license is worded.

This catches people out when shares are split evenly across a large group, or when share capital was set low at formation to keep the initial cost down.

Where it goes wrong. Share capital set below AED 50,000 at formation, or a partner holding 20 percent or less. Both are fixable, but they are fixed on the license before the visa, not during it.

Employee visa

Company sponsors a staff member

For someone you hire. This is the one that involves the labour side as well as immigration, because you are creating an employment relationship, not just a residency. There is a contract, and there are obligations attached to it.

It also depends on your company having the standing to employ, which is not automatic and is decided by how your license and premises are set up.

Where it goes wrong. Employers commit to a start date before the file is approved. Build the approval time into the offer, not around it.

Dependent visa

A resident sponsors family

For your spouse, children and in some cases parents. The sponsor here is you as an individual resident, not your company, which is why you need your own residence visa in place before you can start.

Requirements attach to the sponsor rather than the business, and the supporting documents from abroad usually need attestation, which takes longer than people expect.

Where it goes wrong. Marriage and birth certificates issued overseas arriving unattested. Start attestation early, it is the long pole.

Visit and tourist visas

Short stay, no residence

For someone coming for a short period who is not becoming a resident. A client visiting for meetings, a family member coming to see you, or someone arriving to look at the market before committing to a company.

These are a different thing to a residence visa. There is no medical, no Emirates ID and no stamping, so the process is far shorter, but the stay is fixed and cannot simply be extended indefinitely.

Cost depends on the duration and the type, so we quote these case by case rather than publishing a single figure.

Where it goes wrong. Overstaying. Fines accrue daily and they complicate any residence application you make afterwards. If a visit is turning into a move, tell us before the visa expires, not after.

Long term residence visas

The Golden Visa and the Green Visa sit outside the sponsorship structure above, because they are granted to the individual on their own merit rather than through a company or a relative. Eligibility works differently and so does the process.

We handle those too. Our UAE Golden Visa page covers who actually qualifies, and if you are unsure which route suits you, that is exactly the conversation to have before you spend anything.

The sequence, and where the waiting actually happens

The order is fixed. The durations are not.

Below is the order every residence visa follows. The steps and the authorities are fixed. The times shown are typical working days for a clean file, and they can move with the authority, the season and the emirate.

StepWhat happensTypical time
1. Entry permitImmigrationPermission to enter or to begin the residence process. Time limited, so everything after it is on a clock.3 to 5 days
2. Entry or status changeImmigrationEither the applicant enters on the permit, or if already in the country, their status is changed without leaving.1 day
3. Medical fitness testHealth authorityAttended in person at an approved centre. Results must clear before the file can move on.1 day
4. Emirates ID biometricsICPFingerprints and photograph captured in person. The card follows later, but the file can proceed once captured.5 to 7 days
5. Medical insuranceInsurerCover has to be in place. Without a valid policy the residence stamp will not issue.1 day
6. Residence stampingImmigrationResidence granted against the passport. At this point the person is legally resident.1 to 3 days

Employee visas carry additional labour side steps alongside this sequence. Dependent visas add the sponsor's own documents and any attestation of certificates issued abroad, which commonly takes longer than the visa steps themselves.

What you will be asked to provide

Prepared properly at the start, this is the difference between three weeks and three months

Requirements vary by visa type, emirate and individual case. The list below is what we ask for in most files so we can check everything before anything is submitted.

VisaDocuments we normally need from you
InvestorPassport copy with adequate validity, passport photograph to specification, trade license, company memorandum, and the entry permit once issued.
PartnerAs investor, plus documentation evidencing the shareholding as recorded in the company papers.
EmployeePassport copy, photograph, signed employment offer and contract, educational or professional certificates where the role requires them, and company documents for the sponsoring entity.
DependentSponsor's residence visa, Emirates ID and passport, tenancy documentation, proof of income, and attested marriage or birth certificates for the family members being sponsored.

Anything issued outside the UAE generally needs attestation before it will be accepted. That process runs through the issuing country and then the UAE authorities, and it is the single most common reason a family application takes longer than the family expected. If you know a dependent visa is coming, begin attestation now, not when the rest of the file is ready.

Whether you can sponsor at all

Check this before you spend anything

Not every company can sponsor every visa, and not every license carries visa eligibility. What you can sponsor depends on how your company is licensed and set up, and for family visas it depends on your own circumstances as the sponsor rather than on the business.

This matters commercially, because the wrong license type bought cheaply at the start can leave you unable to sponsor anyone, and correcting it afterwards costs more than choosing correctly would have. We check eligibility before quoting, so you are not sold a package you cannot actually use.

If you are not yet set up, tell us how many visas you will need in the first year before you choose a license and premises. That single answer changes what you should buy.

Approximate cost

One number per visa, everything included

The figures below are approximate and include government and authority fees together with our fee. They are for budgeting. Your written quote confirms the exact number for your case before anything begins.

Investor and partner visas

VisaApproximate cost
Investor visaFrom around AED 4,000
Partner visaFrom around AED 4,000

Employee visas

Employee cost depends on your company's MOHRE category, which is set by the ministry rather than by us. Tell us your category and we will confirm which applies to you.

SituationCategory 2Category 3
New employee visaAround AED 5,500Around AED 7,750
Employee visa renewalAround AED 3,500Around AED 5,750
Contract or residency modificationAround AED 1,550

Family and dependent visas

Family cost depends on two things, who is sponsoring and whether the person you are sponsoring is already inside the UAE or still abroad. Applying from inside costs more, because a status change is involved.

Who sponsors, and whomApplying from outside the UAEAlready inside the UAERefundable deposit
Investor or partner sponsoring parentsAround AED 7,600Around AED 8,900AED 5,000
Partner sponsoring spouse or childAround AED 5,600Around AED 6,900AED 3,000
Employee sponsoring spouse or childAround AED 2,600Around AED 3,850None
Family visa renewal, per personAround AED 1,600None

Which visas carry a deposit, and how much. A refundable government deposit of AED 5,000 applies when an investor or partner sponsors parents, and AED 3,000 when a partner sponsors a spouse or child. Both amounts are already inside the totals above. Family visas sponsored by an employee carry no deposit, and neither do investor, partner or employee visas themselves.

A deposit is money you get back, not money you spend. So sponsoring your parents is really around AED 2,600 of cost plus a refundable AED 5,000, not AED 7,600 gone. Read any competitor quote with that in mind before you compare the headline numbers.

Medical is not required for children under 18, so a child's figure is usually lower than the number shown.

Why we itemise everything

A client came to us after forming his company elsewhere. The setup fee he paid was fair, around AED 2,000. For one residence visa he was charged AED 10,000, given no breakdown, and told the whole amount was government cost. He was then asked for AED 2,000 more because of a problem with his medical.

There was no problem with his medical. He had been overcharged by roughly AED 10,000, and he had no way of knowing, because nobody had ever shown him which part of the money was a government fee and which part was somebody's margin.

That is why every quote we send is itemised. The figures above are approximate so you can budget, but the quote you actually receive shows you each line, what the government takes and what we charge, so you can see exactly what you are paying for.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers on investor, partner, employee and family visas, the sequence, the cost and the deposit.

What is the difference between an investor visa and a partner visa?

Ownership structure. If you own the company on your own, you take an investor visa. If the company has several owners, each qualifying owner takes a partner visa instead.

Partner visas carry two conditions that investor visas do not. The partner must hold more than 20 percent of the shares, and the company's share capital must be AED 50,000 or above. Miss either and that person cannot take one.

How long does a UAE residence visa actually take?

For a clean file, roughly two to three weeks end to end. The entry permit takes three to five days, the medical and status change a day each, Emirates ID biometrics five to seven days, and stamping one to three.

Delays almost never come from the government. They come from documents arriving incomplete, or from an attestation that was started too late.

Is the deposit refundable, and how much is it?

Yes, it is refundable. AED 5,000 applies when an investor or partner sponsors parents, and AED 3,000 when a partner sponsors a spouse or child.

This matters when you compare quotes. Sponsoring your parents shows as around AED 7,600, but AED 5,000 of that comes back to you. The real cost is closer to AED 2,600. Family visas sponsored by an employee carry no deposit at all.

Why is an employee visa more expensive than an investor visa?

Because an employee visa involves the labour side as well as immigration. You are creating an employment relationship, not just a residency, so there are additional ministry fees on top of the immigration steps.

How much more depends on your company's MOHRE category, which the ministry sets. Category 2 works out around AED 5,500 and Category 3 around AED 7,750.

Can I apply if the person is already inside the UAE?

Yes. Instead of entering on a permit, their status is changed inside the country without them having to leave.

It costs more, because the status change is an extra paid step. For a family visa the difference is roughly AED 1,200 to AED 1,300. If someone has not travelled yet, applying from outside is the cheaper route.

Do children need a medical test?

Not if they are under 18. That step is skipped, so a child's visa usually costs less than the figure shown in our tables.

Can any company sponsor visas?

No. It depends on how your company is licensed and set up, and some license types carry no visa eligibility at all.

This is worth checking before you buy anything, because a cheap license that cannot sponsor anyone costs more to correct afterwards than choosing correctly would have. Tell us how many visas you expect in year one and we will confirm what you actually need.

What happens if a visa expires before we renew it?

Fines accrue daily, and they complicate the renewal itself. Renewal is far cheaper than fixing an overstay, around AED 1,600 per person for a family visa.

We track expiry dates for clients we manage, so the renewal starts before it becomes a problem rather than after.

Tell us how many visas, and for whom

Send us the visa types and how many of each. We will confirm whether you can sponsor them, what the sequence looks like for your case, and the full cost split between government fees and ours, in writing.
